Published by the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey, The
Atlas of Major Appalachian Gas Plays contains information compiled by the
geological surveys of Kentucky, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia; West
Virginia University; and consultants in Maryland, New York, Tennessee, and
Virginia, all working under the supervision of the Appalachian Oil and Natural
Gas Research Consortium with funding provided by the U.S. Department of
Energy.
The atlas is a massive compilation: over 225 large-format 22-inch by 17-
inch pages; over 700 maps, graphs, cross sections, stratigraphic columns,
correlation charts, type logs, and other illustrations; detailed data tables
and references; and much, much more describing natural gas plays
stratigraphically from Pennsylvanian to Cambrian reservoirs and geographically
over the entire basin from New York south to Tennessee and from Ohio east to
Maryland.
Representing years of research and information gathering from libraries
and universities, industry and government, The Atlas of Major Appalachian Gas
Plays is a monumental publication and one of the most comprehensive syntheses
of Appalachian Basin natural gas information ever produced.
The atlas is composed of geologic descriptions and data tables for each
of 30 major gas plays grouped by geologic control: fluvial-deltaic sandstone
plays, nearshore sandstone plays, shallow shelf sandstone plays, turbidite
sandstone plays, transgressive sandstone plays, shallow marine shelf carbonate
plays, reef and carbonate plays, unconformity-related plays, fractured
anticlines and combination traps, and fractured reservoir plays.
Each geologic description consists of narratives on play location,
production history, stratigraphy, structure, reservoir, key fields, resources
and reserves, and future trends. Accompanying the narrative are numerous
illustrations including a regional map showing the play outline and producing
wells, a map of key fields, a correlation chart, type logs, stratigraphic and
structural cross sections, isopach and pay thickness maps, initial potential
and cumulative production maps, decline curves and depositional models.
The data table for each play is comprised of 50 data elements for each
field or pool covered in the narrative or illustrations. These data elements
are organized in to categories of basic reservoir data, reservoir parameters,
fluid and gas properties, and volumetric data.
In addition to the atlas volume itself, an available companion product
is the Database of Appalachian Gas Fields and Reservoirs. Developed
concurrently with the atlas, this database contains geologic, engineering, and
production data on more than 4,000 natural gas fields and reservoirs in the
Appalachian Basin. The Database of Appalachian Gas Fields and Reservoirs can
be ordered with or without the atlas volume on 3.5-inch high density diskettes
in either ASCII or EXCEL formats.
The Atlas of Major Appalachian Gas Plays and the Database of Appalachian
Gas Fields and Reservoirs provide a basic framework for formulating
exploration and development strategies within the Appalachian Basin that are
consistent with the goals of the U.S. Department of Energy's "Gas Research
Implementation Plan." The volume and database comprise a long-needed resource
for companies, consultants, and academics unfamiliar with the region as well
as operators with extensive exploration and production experience in the
Basin, and researchers in search of a comprehensive one-volume guide to the
region's natural gas geology.
