Stratigraphic Distribution of Niobium (Nb)

The stratigraphic distribution of Niobium (Nb) shows a distinct trend with low Nb (<4 ppm) in coals of the Pocahontas, New River and lower Kanawha formations and higher and more variable Nb averages in coals of the upper Kanawha formation, Allegheny, Conemaugh and Dunkard Groups. Pittsburgh and Redstone coals of the Monongahela group show low Nb values. With no known mode of occurrence for Nb in coal, and the low correlation with ash yield, this stratigraphic trend is unexplained.
