Zinc in West Virginia coals averaged 14.97 ppm (± 17.57 ppm) with a histogram skewed toward low values showing a tail toward higher values and a maximum value of 202.4 ppm.  Zinc correlated slightly with only cadmium (Cd) (r = +0.6250) and poorly with ash yield (r = +0.5284).  Zinc and cadmium are closely associated in the mineral sphalerite (ZnS) which has been found in only 4 of 24 West Virginia coal samples in an unpublished study by the WVGES.
