Trace
Minerals in West Virginia Coals
Goyazite
is one of the may rare phosphate minerals in coal of the Crandallite mineral
group, this one containing strontium, present as small nondescript blebs
in mineral-rich coal layers (dots at the bottom of the photograph are each
10 µm apart). Sources for the phosphorous include animal debris,
fecal debris and volcanic ash. Goyazite has been observed in Australian
and Japanese coals 1,2.
