Trace Elements in West Virginia Coals

Stratigraphic Distribution of Boron (B)

The stratigraphic distribution of Boron (B) reveals low B values in low volatile bituminous rank coals of the Lower Pennsylvanian (Pocahontas, New River and lower Kanawha Formations), moderate B abundances in Middle Pennsylvanian coals of the middle and upper Kanawha Formation and Allegheny Group and high B abundances in coals of the Conemaugh, Monongahela and Dunkard Groups. Apparently metamorphism mechanisms that increased coal rank and lowered volatile matter in West Virginia coals also lower B contents, resulting in a close relationship between rank (volatile matter on a moisture, mineral-matter-free basis) and B content.
