The histogram of boron content in all West Virginia coal beds shows
a highly skewed distribution with a mean of 20.10 ppm (± 16.11 ppm)
on a whole coal basis. The skewed boron distribution is likely caused
by a rank related decrease in B content lowering the B content of individual
samples of medium and low volatile bituminous coals. A single very
high B value of 216.7 ppm in a bench of the Coalburg coal was observed,
but all other B values were less than 50 ppm. The only boron correlation
observed was a moderate relationship (r =
+0.6933) with the rank related volatile matter (on a moisture, mineral-matter-free
basis).
