Trace Elements in West Virginia Coals
Europium
(Eu) Summary Statistics
The histogram of europium abundances in all West Virginia coal beds
shows a near-normal, slightly skewed distribution with a mean of 0.33 ppm
(± 0.17 ppm) on a whole coal basis. The maximum Eu content
was 1.78 ppm in a bench of the Coalburg coal. Europium correlated
slightly with ash yield and scandium (Sc), thorium (Th), chromium (Cr),
vanadium (V), lead (Pb) and lithium (Li) related to ash forming minerals.
Europium is one of the rare earth elements and correlated mainly with the
other rare earth elements samarium (Sm), cerium (Ce), ytterbium (Yb), terbium
(Tb), lutetium (Lu), lanthanum (La), neodymium (Nd), erbium (Er) and dysprosium
(Dy).
