The stratigraphic distribution shows a gradual increase trend in gallium abundance through the geologic column with low Ga contents in the New River and Pocahontas Formation coals and in the Monongahela Group. Coals with high Ga contents are generally isolated high ash coals.  Statistical analysis indicates a moderate positive relationship between ash and Ga contents.
