Trace Elements in West Virginia Coals
Gallium (Ga) Summary Statistics
The histogram of gallium in all West Virginia coal beds shows an
asymmetrical, slightly skewed distribution with a mean of 6.45 ppm (±
5.26 ppm) on a whole coal basis. The maximum Ga content was 90.42
ppm in the Brush Creek coal. Gallium correlated moderately with ash
yield, indicating an slight association with mineral matter in West
Virginia coals. Gallium also correlated with the ash associated elements
such as vanadium (V), scandium (Sc), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), lithium
(Li), yttrium (Y), thorium (Th), cesium (Cs), nickel (Ni) and zirconium
(Zr) and rare earth elements erbium (Er), lutetium (Lu), ytterbium (Yb),
neodymium (Nd), dysprosium (Dy), europium (Eu) and gadolinium (Gd).
