The stratigraphic distribution of Beryllium (Be) in West Virginia coal beds display a gradual increase upward in the geologic column with coals of the Kanawha Formation containing the highest beryllium contents.  Beryllium content decreased upward through the Allegheny and Conemaugh groups to minimum concentrations of <1 ppm in the important Monongahela coals (Pittsburgh, Redstone and Sewickley).  The geologic significance of this beryllium trend is not clear.
