The histogram of germanium abundances in all West Virginia coal beds shows a distribution highly skewed toward low values with a mean of 3.09 ppm (± 4.62 ppm) on a whole coal basis.  Maximum whole coal Ge content was 51.48 ppm in a sample of the Sewell coal.  Germanium did not correlate with ash yield (r = +0.1440), total sulfur, pyritic sulfur or any trace elements suggesting that Ge is primarily organically bound in coal.
