Selenium in West Virginia coals averaged 4.20 ppm (± 2.83 ppm) with a histogram skewed toward low values and a maximum value of 21.3 ppm in a bench of the Stockton coal.  Selenium correlates only slightly with thorium (r = +0.6032) and not at all with ash yield (r = +0.4525), total sulfur, pyritic sulfur or any other trace elements.
