Trace Elements in West Virginia Coals
Stratigraphic Distribution of Thallium (Tl)

The stratigraphic distribution of Thallium (Tl) is less than 2 ppm on
a whole coal basis through most of the geologic column with higher values
in some pyrite-rich coals (see cautionary
note page), namely the thin and high sulfur Harlem coal in Mineral
County (16.2 ppm Tl and 20.7% total sulfur), a deeply buried Clarion coal
in Wetzel County (10.47 ppm Tl and 3.99% total sulfur), the Gilbert coal
from Wyoming County (9.78 ppm Tl and 4.40% total sulfur) and a thin deeply
buried Pittsburgh coal sample from Wetzel County (6.44 ppm Tl and 9.03%
total sulfur).
