Thallium averaged 1.19 ppm (± 1.55 ppm) in West Virginia coals on a whole coal basis with a histogram highly skewed toward the low values showing an extended tail toward higher values with a maximum value of 16.2 ppm in the Harlem coal (see cautionary note page).  Thallium correlated very poorly with ash yield (r = +0.3308) and moderately only with mercury (Hg) (r = +0.7006) and total sulfur (r = +0.6465), but not pyritic sulfur.  Mercury occurs in solid solution in pyrite which explains the correlations with mercury and total sulfur.
