The histogram of barium abundance in West Virginia coal beds show a near normal distribution skewed toward low values with a mean of 109.86 ppm on a whole coal basis with a high degree of variation (± 298.98 ppm).  Maximum Ba content was 6360 ppm in the Lower Kittanning coal, with a sample of the Brush Creek coal containing 5343 ppm and 1860 ppm in the Williamson coal (see cautionary notes page).  All 3 high Ba samples were coals immediately below marine zones.  Barium correlated only slightly with ash yield (r = +0.5168), gallium (r = +0.5872) and vanadium (r = +0.5884).
